How to convince your parents to get you an iPhone right now
Here is a guide for you discussing how to convince your parents to get you an iPhone.
Using old flip phones might be something hipsters enjoy doing, but those phones aren’t quite up to the modern standards. They simply lack the features a good smartphone can provide. However, asking your parents for an iPhone is not necessarily an easy thing to do. For starters, the phone is rather expensive. And, add to that the facts that they would have to pay for your use of the phone each month. Furthermore, if you go through the data usage of your plan, you might really ramp up your bill.
Moreover, the money is not the only issue your parents have in mind when you ask them to get you a phone. The biggest issue for most parents is the fact that a lot of kids don’t use their phones responsibly, and they believe that you are not an exception.
Step 1 – Prove you can be responsible
We want to get the first, and the most obvious issue out of the way first. Your parents are afraid that you are too irresponsible to have an iPhone. Whether they are scared of you losing your focus in school or you simply spending too much of their money online – it all boils down to the same thing: responsibility. The very first thing you want to do is make your parents know you are responsible. Establish it as a fact. After all, that is precisely where your conversation with your parents will go.
The operative word here is “fact.” It’s not enough for you to simply tell them you will be responsible. You have to prove it! So, take your time and put in the effort to log everything of importance. The easy bit is to show that it doesn’t have to be too expensive. Sure, the iPhone has its price, but you can prove that you won’t overspend with it.
For starters, make sure you don’t lose your valuables. Believe us, if you have lost just one of your older phones or gadgets, your parents will remember it. So, when you ask them to buy you a very expensive phone, they will undoubtedly bring it up.
The second thing to focus on is showing you are responsible when it comes to your obligations. Make sure your school performance is excellent and that you are doing all of your chores. Also, make sure not to complain while doing so. Showing your parents that you are a person that is always willing to work when it is necessary will do well to convince them that you won’t fall behind if you get a new toy.
If they maintain that they worry about your spending, you can offer to help them make payments. You can get a part-time job that will help you make the money you need. That will both show your parents your dedication and responsibility, and take away their worries about your expenses. Start by advertising yourself as a babysitter or a tutor for other kids. Those jobs pay well and won’t take up a lot of your time. But remember, if you want to show your parents you are responsible, we would recommend avoiding overspending.
Once you do all of that and prepare a presentation with all of the facts, make sure to show them how much the phone will cost. Depending on the plan your family uses, they might even pick the phone up for free. All that will be left is for you to pay for the monthly subscription. Usually, you’ll be able to get a subscription for under $50 per month. That would only add up to about 4 hours of babysitting on average.
Step 2 – Inform them that iPhones can help people with their studies
While we understand that this isn’t the reason you want an iPhone, it is a fact that can help you sway your parents’ decision. And, Apple has been working on numerous apps that should enhance the learning experience in schools.
You can show your parents the incredible array of apps that would be useful. And, of course, promise them that you will use those apps to improve your studies. And, of course, you can use facts to show to your parents that the learning apps really do work.
For example, there was a study done by NYU (New York University) that evaluated the effect learning apps had on kids. They used kids between 4 and 6 years of age, and they used reading apps to help them learn how to read. The study has found that, without exceptions, kids who used their phones to study have shown improvements. And, the best part is that it only took up to 15 minutes per day.
And there are similar apps for various things. There are sophisticated apps that can help students master chemistry, physics, and of course math. As a matter of fact, there are developers that specialize in turning learning apps into engaging games.
Even without apps, iPhones are still a powerful learning tool. After all, they are essentially just miniature supercomputers you can put in your pocket. It offers internet access, and you can load up your entire library to be opened on your phone. In fact, it can even help you do your homework every day. To further prove this point, we would recommend borrowing an iPhone from one of your friends (if that is a possibility) and showing your parents the exact way you can use the iPhone to your advantage while doing homework.
At the very least, the phone lets you use a free dictionary and allows you access to various encyclopedias. Also, let’s not forget that more and more teachers are getting used to the digital age. They are starting to upload their lectures online and letting students use them while studying.
But, if they won’t be swayed by the learning apps, you can also point out that apps can help you organize your day.
Step 3 – Remind them you need to have a phone either way
We know that the “why not?” argument is not the best one. At least not when it is presented alone. But, once you go over all the facts, it is useful to bring up the fact that phones are a big part of life. Your parents will want to be able to contact you at a moment’s notice, or there might be emergencies. In this day and age, it is basically unsafe not to have a phone. There could be accidents, changes of plans, or other emergencies that could end up catastrophic without communication. Something as simple as a flat tire on your parent’s car while they were coming to pick you up from school can lead to serious complications. Complications you can avoid if you have a phone with you.
Unfortunately, that argument can’t bring you even close to the range of iPhones and other powerful devices. However, it does lead to several other arguments you can make. Firstly, non-smart phones are no longer a viable choice for a very simple reason. They are too old. Even high-quality phones aren’t expected to last for years upon years. They all have an expiration date. They can be difficult to find and buy. So, going out of their way to buy you a bad phone that will probably break soon is simply not a good choice, especially if their reasoning is that they want to save money. Not to mention that they don’t have to spend too much buying you an iPhone.
For example, they don’t have to buy the latest model for you. While iPhone X does cost a thousand dollars, they can get you a used iPhone 6s Plus for less than 300. And, some of the older models are all but free. Now, we understand that you didn’t start out with the idea of getting the 6s Plus. But, it does offer a lot of the same functionality newer models do, and it is still a powerful phone. Also, getting them to agree to buy you an older model is putting your foot in the door. It might take you a while, but you will be able to work your way up to newer models.
Step 4 – Discuss how iPhones are trackable
One of the things iPhones offer that older phones don’t is the trackability. Namely, if you get an iPhone, your parents will be able to check your location at any time. That might sound like an invasion of your privacy, but believe us, your parents worry about your safety all the time when they are not around. Having that peace of mind is incredibly important to parents.
That is why you can present this fact to them in an effort to convince them to get you an iPhone. There are numerous apps they can install on your phone that will let them check up on you at a moment’s notice. Of course, they could use the family locator services with older phones. But, there is an issue with that idea. Namely, that service comes with a fee while the iPhone app is entirely free of charge, not to mention that the iPhone app is clearly superior.
Furthermore, the tracking can go both ways. You will be able to know where your parents are if you ever end up in a crowded place and lose sight of each other. We can’t tell you how many times we had confusing phone calls in big stores trying to explain where we are. And, the same probably goes for your parents. Talk to them and point out the fact that you will no longer have to worry about losing them in big crowds or stores.
Step 5 – Bring up the useful GPS capabilities
Everyone has at least one story about how they got lost. However, technology has given us a very simple solution to this problem. The same GPS system your parents use to get around town can be useful for pedestrians as well. As you grow up, they will have to give you a bit more independence. Don’t push too much on that front, but remind them that getting lost is definitely a possibility. At least it is if you don’t have an iPhone with you.
I know if your parents once had to try and improvise the way home after getting lost, they will definitely appreciate the navigation feature of the iPhone.
Step 6 – Show them that iPhones can be cheap
We have touched upon this several times in the article. But, the truth is, iPhones don’t have to be expensive. Use all of the previous facts as a build up for this one. When you do the math, getting an iPhone is simply not as expensive as people believe.
The main reason for that is the slew of free applications your parents can install on the phone. Starting with locator apps that cost around $10 per month otherwise, going over the GPS function, and leading to the free Skype or FaceTime calls, new phones are capable of saving money.
Also, if you add all that money up, it ends up costing them almost as much as adding that iPhone to the monthly plan. And, if you offer your parents to earn money and pay for part or the entirety of the phone, they will simply have to agree that it is time for you to get an iPhone.
In the end, we can’t guarantee success with any of these steps. However, arguing with facts and sound reasoning will definitely get you further than pouting would. In our experience, parents tend to be very reasonable when you show the indisputable facts to them. Furthermore, they will appreciate you putting in the effort to convince them. Using these steps, you will increase your chances significantly. Just remember, take it slow, prepare all of your arguments, and explain why the phone is necessary. I hope this guide on how to convince your parents to get you an iPhone was helpful.
